Starting preschool is an exciting milestone, but it can also bring anxiety—for both children and parents. For many toddlers, it’s their first time spending a significant amount of time away from home, and that can be daunting. At Maltman’s Green, we work closely with families to help ease the transition and make the experience as positive as possible for everyone involved.
Separation anxiety is common, but there are ways to minimise it and help your child feel more comfortable as they start their preschool journey. Here are five tips to help:
- Establish a Consistent Goodbye Routine: Create a simple, reassuring routine to use every time you drop off your child. Whether it’s a quick kiss, hug, or wave, having a consistent goodbye signal helps toddlers understand that goodbyes are part of the routine, and that you’ll return at the end of the day.
- Start with Short Visits: If possible, gradually introduce your child to preschool with shorter visits. This allows them to get used to the environment, the teachers, and the other children without feeling overwhelmed by a long day. Maltman’s Green school is conveniently situated in the centre of Gerrards Cross close to the M40 and M25 making it easily accessible for you to pick up or drop off your girl.
- Talk Positively About Preschool: Build excitement for preschool by talking about the fun activities and new friends they’ll meet. Let your child know that school is a fun, safe place where they will learn and play, and that you’re excited for them to have this new experience.
- Bring a Comfort Object: Let your child bring a small object from home, such as a favourite toy or blanket. Having something familiar to hold onto can be very reassuring during those first few days.
- Stay Calm and Confident: Children are perceptive and can pick up on your emotions. If you remain calm, positive, and confident during the drop-off, your child is more likely to mirror your feelings and feel secure about the transition.
