Excellence with a sense of fun!

Curriculum | Music and Drama

Music plays a very important part in life at Maltman's Green and has run like a golden thread in the school since it was founded in 1918. Success has come in many forms, not least in our girls winning the BBC School Choir of the Year competition in 2003 and 2007, and more recently receiving Gold medals at the Marlow Music Festival for our Senior Handbell team –the Maltman’s Belles – and Chamber Choir.

All girls, from Nursery to Year 6, receive two class Music lessons a week with a varied curriculum including singing, performing, composing and listening. We have a Pre-Prep Music Room, complete with grand piano and a variety of classroom percussion instruments, as well as a Prep Music Room furnished with an assortment of larger classroom instruments and electric keyboards. There are also a number of practice rooms available for individual lessons and rehearsals.

Emphasis is placed on public performance and all pupils have the opportunity to take part in at least one production a year. Pupils also have the opportunity to develop performance confidence through musical solos during lessons – affectionately known as ‘mini-concert time’ - and in Music Assemblies in the Senior School.

As part of our outreach programme, groups of girls visit local residential homes to perform small musical concerts including carols at Christmas and songs and instrument performances at other times of the year. The Chamber Choir and Maltman’s Belles ensembles are regularly invited to perform at various local events including the annual Chalfont St Peters Feast Day and Gerrards Cross Summer Fair.

The music department at Maltman's Green has a strong reputation and excellent standards. Most girls learn at least one instrument in school and there are numerous groups and ensembles that enable the girls to play together. Singing also forms a big part of the music department with over 100 girls participating in our various Choirs.

Building on performance opportunities in Music, girls take part in drama lessons right from Nursery level. Drama games build confidence and unlock imagination and creativity and even girls in Little Malties take part in make believe. From Year 3 girls enjoy weekly drama lessons and, in the Senior School, can further explore their thespian tendencies in extra-curricular speech and drama clubs.

During Book Week we take the opportunity to explore the concept of page to stage as Year 5 girls take part in a Play in a Day. Christmas provides us with the most performance opportunities for the girls as they take part in dedicated nativity plays from Nursery up to Year 2. Our Year 4s get their turn on the stage with their all singing all dancing production taking place at the end of the Spring Term. The final performance of their Maltman’s Green journey comes in Year 6 with the leavers play, performed in our dedicated performance space with full production values.
