Curriculum | Core Subjects

English

We provide a firm foundation of basic literacy skills and develop confidence and independent learning in the three areas of Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening. We instilling a lasting enthusiasm for the subject through a range of teaching styles and talks/workshops from visiting poets and authors. Girls are taught to:

• Write fluent and expressive poetry and stories using a wide vocabulary.
• Write for a range of audiences using spelling and grammar accurately and confidently.
• Read quality fiction suitable for their age group and discuss a wide variety of novels and non-fiction texts.
• Speak clearly, fluently and cogently to a range of audiences within the school.
• Listen carefully to other pupils with understanding and empathy

Mathematics

We make Maths fun and relevant, helping girls acquire the skills and confidence to tackle and pass Common Entrance and Scholarship examinations. Maths is taught by Form teachers in the Junior School and enthusiastic Maths specialists from Year 4 onwards.

All pupils receive a balanced programme of study with the emphasis being placed on developing a mental facility with numbers and learning through practical activities. Classroom assistants enable us to have several activities happening at the same time and support is given to those who need reinforcement, as well as to those who are able to take the subject to a higher level, for example with regional competitions.

The use of ICT in Maths starts in the nursery with the use of interactive whiteboards to play mathematical games.

Science

Our girls love Science and their enthusiasm is reflected in the excellent results they achieve in standardised tests. Whether searching for bugs, flying parachutes or refining rock salt, Science at Maltman’s Green is enjoyable, relevant and interesting, enabling the children to become confident scientists. The emphasis is on investigation and discovery. Work is carefully planned and differentiated and includes visits and field trips.

In the Senior School, Science is taught in dedicated Science Laboratories. Outside, we have grassland areas (including a meadow), hedgerows, and a wooded area for practical investigations. The School also has a Discovery Garden, which includes a pond, where focused activities may be undertaken, including pond dipping and the study of aquatic Flora and Fauna.
