Girls at Maltman’s Green had a very special visitor this week, Kate Pankhurst – children’s book author and illustrator best known for her books ‘Fantastically Great Women Who Changed the World’ and ‘Fantastically Great Women Who Made History’.
Full of beautiful illustrations and astounding facts, Pankhurst’s books are the perfect introduction to just a few of the most incredible women who helped shape the world we live in – including distant relative, Emmeline Pankhurst.
Pankhurst needed little introduction, most of the girls knew her books and had seen her beautiful illustrations, so she kicked off by talking about what had inspired her Fantastically Great Women books and drew the girls into a wonderful adventure with our very own Amelia Earhart complete with dressing up jacket, hat, scarf and goggles.
Afterwards, the girls took part in a workshop where Pankhurst taught them how to draw her unique style of cartoon illustrations. Many of the girls (and teachers!) were surprised with what they were able to produce. Later there was a book signing and Pankhurst was around to answer the girls’ numerous questions, she even received some fantastically great women suggestions for her next book!
No doubt the girls will remember their special day and maybe one day, some of them might make it into a future Fantastically Great Women book.
