Year 5 are currently in the midst of composing their own original protest songs, with the aim of conveying a positive message and challenging everyone to work towards creating a better world.
The girls have listened to a variety of existing protest songs, ranging from the Black Eyed Peas, Muse and John Lennon, to the more solemn ‘Children of Africa’ as well as the environmental awareness song ‘Nowhere Else to Go’. They have discovered how the medium of song has been used for centuries to draw attention to various historical events and political issues.
Year 5 have been working significantly on developing their collaborative skills, composing their songs in small groups of three or four. They have had to create completely original lyrics as well as the melody line, also adding various percussion instruments for rhythmic interest and of course singing together.
Topics for the group songs have ranged from global warming and wildlife, to stopping bullying and being friendly to all, the HS2 and plenty of light-hearted songs about various school rules!
