Maltman’s Green School had been re-awarded it’s Eco-schools Green Flag status for the fourth consecutive time making it one of the longest standing top Sustainability schools in the area.
The assessor was bowled over by the enthusiasm and knowledge of the Eco-councillors who run the programme in the school. The council is made up of elected pupils from Years 2 to 6 and they keep the school on its toes in both what it teaches the girls about sustainability and the progress the school makes itself as an organisation.
The two years that make up the period the flag is awarded for have been very busy. The Eco-council have had to work with the building contractors to make sure that they were making the Head’s new house as energy efficient as possible. The assessor was also impressed with the level of involvement of the girls. As examples Year 3 have litter picked for the Queen’s jubilee while the five different gardening clubs have kept the kitchen well supplied with fruit and vegetables and the office with flowers.
All girls have part of their curriculum outside and the Nursery now take part in an in-house Forest School programme with the school’s own qualified Forest Schools teacher. Mrs Pardon, Headmistress, said “I am thrilled that the girls have gained such a prestigious award. Sustainability is at the heart of the School”.
We are all pleased and proud at Maltman’s Green School. We now have a lot of work to do to maintain our status.
