Extra-Curricular | Music

The music department at Maltman's Green has a strong reputation and excellent standards. Most girls learn at least one instrument in school and there are numerous groups and ensembles that enable the girls to play together. Singing also forms a big part of the music department with over 100 girls participating in our various Choirs.

Our non-chargeable groups include:

  • Year 3-4 choir (non-selective)
  • Year 5-6 choir (non-selective)
  • Chamber choir (by invitation) – For girls in Years 5-6
  • Orchestra (for any instrumentalist, except piano, from grade 2 and up) – For girls in Years 4-6
  • Flute ensemble - grade 1+
  • Brass ensemble - grade 1+
  • String ensemble - grade 1+
  • Guitar groups
  • Year 4 Hand Bells
  • Year 5-6 Hand Bells "Maltman’s Belles" (by invitation)

The Maltman's Belles

This group is made up of girls who have a strong and confident ability to read music and keep time. The Maltman’s Belles have performed at the Music for Youth annual festival, and have been invited to perform at the National Festival for Youth in Birmingham. They have won Gold medals at the Marlow Music festival over the past few years and represented the school at various local events including the Gerrards Cross Summer Fair and performing on the main stage at the Chalfont St Peter Feast Day every Summer.

Instrument tuition

This tuition is chargeable. Some instruments are only available for certain year groups:

  • Piano
  • Flute
  • Violin
  • Cello
  • Saxophone
  • Clarinet
  • Brass
  • Harp
  • Guitar
  • Recorder
  • Singing

Music lessons take place between 8.00am and 4.30pm and if held during lesson time, will only be scheduled during PE (not Swimming), Drama, Music, CDT, Art or RE (or French for Year 5&6). Girls who learn an instrument to the required level are given the opportunity to join one of the instrumental ensembles, rehearsing on a weekly basis.
