Curriculum | Gymnastics

A range of gymnastic skills is explored in Key Stage 1 (KS1) with basic formal movements being developed on both the floor and on small apparatus. Girls are encouraged to work as individuals until their level of skills enables them to work in pairs and small group tasks. Of their two weekly sessions one lesson concentrates on Olympics gymnastics (specific floor and vault skills) and the other develops the creative and modern educational aspects.

Further development of these disciplines takes place in KS2. Extra- curricular performance, training and club levels help to challenge and stretch ability for the more able. Pupils are also entered into Gymnastic competitions where they enjoy competing to a high national standard in several organisations.

Pupils benefit from an extensive range of high quality gymnastic equipment, including soft training apparatus, in the two purpose built halls. One hall is specifically geared towards Olympic gym style with a full sized floor area, vaults and beams. The other hall is equipped with wall frames and a clear floor area for gym, dance and indoor games.

Dance is taught as a separate lesson in KS1. The syllabus covers dance, drama, country dance & modern educational themes using various stimuli. At KS2 dance is integrated into the gymnastic curriculum to enhance creativity in sequence work and promote independent learning opportunities.
