History
History should be enjoyed. We capitalise on children’s natural curiosity and thirst for knowledge. We aim to create a stimulating environment where pupils can gain an understanding of the past, in relation to themselves, their families, their community and the wider world, as appropriate to their age, ability and aptitude. By learning about their heritage we can help our pupils to make better sense of their changing world.
In the Junior School, children are taught about everyday life, progressing from familiar situations to the more distant. They also learn about the lives of famous events and people, including Guy Fawkes and Mary Seacole. As they progress through the school, pupils become more skilled in carrying out their own research projects about a particular topic they have studied. These include Romans, Ancient Egypt, Tudors and Britain since 1930. Pupils learn to locate and assess evidence, detect bias, analyse and interpret facts from a range of sources, write empathetically and present their findings in a variety of ways, both orally and in writing.
Visits are made to places of historical interest and we often have visiting speakers and actors who come to the school to stimulate learning and bring History alive.
