English & Drama
English is taught in a lively and forward-looking Department with a wide variety of excellent resources. We aim to provide a firm foundation of basic literacy skills, whilst instilling a lasting enthusiasm for the subject. We welcome visits from published poets and authors who provide stimulating opportunities for pupils to experience the creative writing process.
We aim to develop confidence and independent learning in the three areas of Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening. Through a range of teaching styles, including ICT, we teach the pupils to be able to:
- Write fluent and expressive poetry and stories using a wide vocabulary
- Write for a range of audiences using spelling and grammar accurately and confidently
- Read quality fiction suitable for their age group and discuss a wide variety of novels and non-fiction texts
- Speak clearly, fluently and cogently to a range of audiences within the school
- Listen carefully to other pupils with understanding and empathy
All girls enjoy a dedicated Drama lesson once a week as well as taking part in annual productions. We aim to produce literate and articulate pupils, able to meet the demands of their chosen senior schools with confidence.
